ABOUT FORT NELSON FIRST NATION:

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Governance Coordinator is the first point of contact for Chief and Council and is responsible for providing confidential and comprehensive professional administrative, technical, and clerical support to Chief and Council in alignment with approved practices, policies, budgets, and standards. This employee supports Chief and Council and the Executive Director by assisting with the coordination and execution of governance services, public relations activities, and community meetings.

The Governance Coordinator ensures the effective management of day-to-day communications, filing systems, records, and correspondence for Chief and Council. Responsibilities include preparing and setting up for meetings, taking minutes, drafting official communications, following up on meeting action items, planning agendas, and ensuring the smooth flow and tracking of information.

This position works closely with department heads and Boards and Committees reporting to Chief and Council, relays communications from community members and external stakeholders to Council, and prepares honorarium payments as required. Additionally, the Governance Coordinator assists in organizing travel arrangements and providing support for community meetings and other related duties essential to the Nation’s affairs.

A key element of success for this employee is the development and maintenance of an awareness and understanding of all relevant governance issues that the Chief and Council are working on, and to have all key information on hand or readily accessible to facilitate and support the deliberations and decisions of Chief and Council. WORK SETTING:
This work takes place Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays. The majority of work occurs at a desk using desktop peripherals. Some travel, evenings, and public meetings. Will be required to use a company vehicle to run errands related to the work. Overtime as approved by the Supervisor. Interacts with employees, management staff, and community members. May be exposed to emotionally charged situations.

Starting Rate: $35.33/hr

Qualifications

WHAT YOU BRING:

Knowledge & Experience
• Three years experience working in a clerical/administrative support role.
• Experience/training preparing proposals, briefing notes, meeting minutes, reports, and other communications applying standard formatting practices.
• Mature and professional individual with a high school diploma, and an equivalent combination of education and/or training.
• Knowledge of/willingness to learn and respect cultural diversity regarding local Indigenous culture.

Skills & Abilities
• Proficient in MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, Google Workspace™, Zoom, internet use, spreadsheets, databases, and basic computer upkeep.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including active listening skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong ability to adapt to changing priorities, apply problem-solving skills, manage competing demands, and meet deadlines
• Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, while building and maintaining positive working relationships
• Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and exercise sound judgment

Other Requirements
• Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends for special meetings.
• Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening.
• Satisfactory completion of a police information check
• Ability to provide own transportation to work.
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and Drivers Abstract.

Optional/Assets
• Experience with or an understanding of First Nations Governance
• Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC), or similar, designation.
• Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree.
