About the Position:

The Fort Nelson Aboriginal Friendship Society is seeking a compassionate, motivated, and community-focused HIV/AIDS Harm Reduction Worker to support individuals and communities through education, outreach, prevention, and harm reduction services. This position is designed to help reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C (HCV), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other communicable diseases associated with unprotected sec and substance use

Working from a hard reduction and culturally respectful approach, the successful candidate will help connect individuals to resources, provide education and support, and collaborate with community partners to promote health and wellness throughout Fort Nelson and surrounding areas.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Resource Development:

  • Identify, compile, and maintain a current directory of local services and supports.
  • Develop and distribute resource maps and information related to harm reduction, prevention education, testing, treatment, and support services.
  • Regularly update resource materials and ensure information remains accurate and accessible.

Regional Collaboration:

  • Prepare brief reports highlighting local progress, challenges, and emerging needs related to HIV and HCV response.
  • Participate in regional meetings, teleconferences, and collaborative initiatives with service providers across Northern British Columbia.
  • Assist in developing regional evaluation and reporting frameworks for community-based HIV and HCV programs.

Harm Reduction Services:

  • Establish and facilitate a local Harm Reduction Committee involving community stakeholders and service providers.
  • Distribute harm reduction supplies and educational materials throughout Fort Nelson and surrounding communities, including remote and reserve locations.
  • Collaborate with First Nations health organizations, healthcare providers, and community agencies.
  • Educate participants on the safe use of harm reduction supplies and the risks associated with sharing and reusing equipment.
  • Promote and support Take Home Naloxone initiatives.

Outreach and Client Support:

  • Travel throughout the community to deliver supplies, workshops, information sessions, and support services.
  • Provide prevention education and facilitate connections to healthcare providers, peer supports, and community resources.
  • Encourage and empower individuals to identify personal goals and strategies to reduce health risks.

Program Evaluation and Reporting:

  • Develop and maintain data collection tools to support program evaluation and reporting requirements.
  • Collect qualitative and quantitative information for semi-annual outcome-based reports.

Salary: $28.00/hr

Qualifications

  • Certificate, diploma, or experience in Social Services, Community Support, Health Promotion, Indigenous Studies, Human Services, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and community-based health approaches.
  • Understanding of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, STIs, and related health issues.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with community partners.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and diverse populations is an asset.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and trauma-informed practice.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid BC Driver's License and access to reliable transportation.
